Description

Authentic Italian Bolognese sauce is a rich, savory sauce that transforms humble ingredients into something extraordinary, perfect for nurturing souls and creating memories around the dinner table.

Ingredients

Scale

2 tablespoons Olive Oil
2 pounds Lean Ground Beef
1 large Yellow Onio
2 Carrots
2 Celery Stalks
4 cloves Garlic
1 teaspoon Dried Oregano
1/2 teaspoon Dried Thyme
Pinch Red Pepper Flakes
1 cup Dry Red Wine
28 ounces Crushed Tomatoes
6 ounces Tomato Paste
1 cup Whole Milk
1 cup Beef Broth
2 Bay Leaves
Salt
Black Pepper
Fresh Basil or Parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Drain excess fat
  2. Add the finely diced onion, carrots, and celery to the pot. Sauté for about 8-10 minutes
  3. Stir in the minced garlic, dried oregano, dried thyme, and red pepper flakes. Cook until fragrant
  4. Pour in the red wine and simmer, scraping the bottom of the pot, until reduced by half
  5. Return the browned beef to the pot. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, whole milk, beef broth, bay leaves, salt, and pepper
  6. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover with a small crack for steam, and simmer for 2-4 hours
  7. After simmering, remove bay leaves, taste, and adjust seasoning. If too thick, add a splash of broth
  8. Serve hot with your favorite pasta

Notes

Bolognese sauce tastes even better the next day.

Use high-quality tomatoes for best flavor.
