Description

Spaghetti Garlic Bread Bowls are a comforting and hearty meal combining classic spaghetti with the delightful experience of eating it from a crispy, garlicky bread bowl. This dish is fun, interactive, and minimizes dish duty, making it perfect for busy weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound spaghetti or your preferred pasta shape
  • 4 large round loaves of crusty bread (such as sourdough, Italian round, or country white)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 34 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a little kick)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (to balance acidity)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped, plus more for garnish
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced (for garlic bread)
  • 1/4 cup fresh Parmesan cheese, grated, plus more for serving
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes
  2. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, and sugar. Simmer for at least 30 minutes
  3. While the sauce simmers, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook spaghetti until al dente. Drain and set aside
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice off the tops of the bread loaves and hollow out the insides, leaving a 1-inch thick shell
  5. Melt butter and stir in minced garlic and Parmesan. Brush inside and rim of bread bowls with garlic butter
  6. Place bread bowls on a baking sheet. Fill each bowl with spaghetti and pour marinara sauce over it. Sprinkle mozzarella on top
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes until bread is golden and cheese is bubbly

Notes

Make sure to leave a sturdy 1-inch thick wall when hollowing out the bread to prevent sogginess.

Cooking spaghetti al dente is crucial, as it will continue to cook in the oven.
