Ingredients
6 large sourdough or whole wheat bread bowls (about 6–8 inches in diameter)
1 tablespoon Olive oil
1 small Yellow onion, finely diced
1 Red bell pepper, finely diced
2 cloves Garlic, minced
8 ounces Fresh or thawed shrimp, peeled, deveined, and chopped into bite-sized pieces
8 ounces Imitation crab meat or real crab meat, flaked
4 ounces Cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup Heavy cream or half-and-half
1/4 cup Chicken or vegetable broth
1/2 cup Shredded mozzarella cheese, plus more for topping
1/4 cup Grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped, plus more for garnish
1 tablespoon Fresh dill, chopped
1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
1/2 teaspoon Black pepper
1/4 teaspoon Salt (adjust to taste)
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread Bowls: Carefully cut a circle from the top of each bread bowl to create a lid. Hollow out the inside of each bread bowl, leaving a sturdy wall about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C)
- Sauté Aromatics: In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and red bell pepper. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant
- Cook the Seafood: Add the chopped shrimp to the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes, until pink and cooked through. Stir in the flaked crab meat, Old Bay seasoning, black pepper, and salt. Cook for an additional minute, just to combine the flavors
- Create the Creamy Base: Reduce the heat to low. Add the softened cream cheese, heavy cream, and chicken/vegetable broth to the skillet. Stir continuously until the cream cheese melts and forms a smooth, creamy sauce. Ensure everything is well combined for the best stuffed seafood bread bowls
- Add Cheeses and Herbs: Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese, the grated Parmesan cheese, fresh parsley, and fresh dill. Mix until the cheeses are melted and the herbs are evenly distributed throughout the seafood mixture. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed
- Fill the Bread Bowls: Carefully spoon the creamy seafood mixture into each hollowed-out bread bowl. Pack it in generously. Place the filled bread bowls on a baking sheet
- Bake to Perfection: Sprinkle a bit more mozzarella cheese over the top of each filled bread bowl. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the bread bowls are lightly toasted, the filling is hot and bubbly, and the cheese on top is melted and golden brow
- Serve Immediately: Carefully remove the Tasty Stuffed Seafood Bread Bowls from the oven. Garnish with a little extra fresh parsley, if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
Choose the Right Bread: Sturdy bread is essential to hold up to the filling. Sourdough is recommended.
